Letter to Zahra, On your 3rd birthday.

I wrote this for Andina Firasha Zahra on her 3rd birthday.

July 20th 2005.

When you’re all grown up

I won’t get to see you toddling down the hall,

watch you discover the smell of flower,

or learn to roll a ball.

When you’re all grown up

I’ll miss the sweet smell just after you take a bath,

the way you splash in a tub with delight,

the grin on your face as you laugh.

When you’re all grown up

I won’t get to feed you

or brush your little teeth.

You won’t need me to rock and sing to you.

Or hold you as you sleep.

When you’re all grown up

I’ll miss snuggling on our “red love couch”,

slobbery kisses and big hug,

and little hands giving my pants a tug.

When you’re all grown up

I won’t pour your milk,

wipe your face and pick up your clothes,

change your diaper,

or brush your hair each night,

clip your nails or wipe your little nose.

When you’re all grown up

There won’t be little finger prints smeared on the glass,

or toys to pick up from the floor.

My dear Zahra, Overtime you will forget all these sweet little things

that have made me fall in LOVE.

But i’ll hold these precious memories close to my heart

When you’re all grown up
